What to Do in DC When it Rains

Rain is no stranger to Washington, DC. There's precipitation year round in the nation's capital, including thunderstorms today. During summer months it tends to rain more frequently, but rain doesn't have to damper your plans. Be prepared with our list of things to do when it's rainy in DC.
Here's our list of our favorite things to do when it rains in DC:
  • Where you can watch classic movies: Landmark Theater, this unique movie theater, on E Street plays indie, independent and re-run classics. There's also gourmet concessions, a bar, and plush chairs. Cozy up to Rocky Horror and The Room.
  • Where you can warm up (and dry off): If you can get a reservation or a last-minute opening at Founding Farmers on Pennsylvania Avenue - take it! You'll be surprised how much delight you'll find in warming up with their chicken pot pie and watching the rain outside their floor-to-ceiling windows.
  • Where you can watch the rain come down and people watch: Located in Dupont Circle near our hotel, Dirty Martini is an upscale lounge to grab unique bites and fun cocktails. Sit near the front of the restaurant where you can people watch from large windows that face Connecticut Avenue.
  • Where you can still get your tourist fix: There's usually a performance daily at Ford's Theatre. It's perfect entertainment in the evening. If you have more time to spare during the day, look into tickets for the daily tour experience.
  • Where you can forget that it's raining outside: Head over to El Centro D.F. in Georgetown for chips, guacamole and delicious pitchers of margaritas. You'll enjoy the ambiance and food so much that you may end up staying all day. If you visit the 14th Street location, ask to sit in their underground Tequileria - you'll definitely forget it's raining.
  • If the weather clears up, it's a perfect time to explore Chinatown or stroll along the National Mall to admire the well-lit Lincoln Memorial, Reflecting Pool and Washington Monument.
There's plenty to see and do when you stay in Dupont Circle. Our hotel concierge also loves to make recommendations, so don't forget to ask them when you stay at The Embassy Row Hotel.
