Full of lights, festivals, markets, and art, the city never ices over. There are plenty of things to do during the winter in Washington, D.C., but we’ve highlighted seven of our favorites!

Smithsonian National Zoo

Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the National Zoo to marvel at over 500,000 environmentally-friendly LED lights that transform the National Zoo to a winter wonderland. Make Zoolights a part of your annual holiday tradition, and dance alongside the live music performances, eat the tasty treats, and shop their holiday market.


City Center

Chinatown neighborhood in Washington, D.C.

Known as the “District of Joy,” City Center hosts year-round installations according to season. Each installation is a smash hit on Instagram, and an awesome backdrop to any photo. This winter, they have snowflakes hanging on the city.


Georgetown GLOW

You’ve never seen an installation quite like this. Georgetown GLOW, the region's only curated exhibition of outdoor public light art installations, lures visitors from all walks. Set against the historic backdrop of DC's oldest and most neighborhood (JFK even proposed to Jackie at one of their older restaurants), it’s a reimagined take on the art experience.

 Right downstairs, in the hotel lobby try a unique silent experience. There’s equal parts of dancing and silence, but you’ll have to experience it to fully understand. Gather your friends for the ultimate dance experience. Join the silent dance movement by reserving your wireless headphones in advance for $15 online (reserve online), or $20 at the event. Downtown Holiday Market

Noon to 8 pm, daily

 Get in the holiday spirit and shop alongside other jolly customers. The Downtown Holiday Market, located in the heart of Washington, D.C., is a local shopping village with more than 150 regional artisans, crafters and boutique businesses of ethnically produced goods. Take a bit of D.C. home when you visit the annual Downtown Holiday Market.

Think beer garden fused with winter wonderland. On Saturday, January 23rd, Yards Park will be converted into a winter festival with a frosty beer garden, ski lounge, hot tubs, themed cocktails, adult snow cones, and video games from 2 - 6pm. Get cozy around fire-pits and take pictures with the extravagant ice sculptures. Restaurants native to Navy Yard like TaKorean, 100 Montaditos, and Ice Cream Jubilee will provide the local treats. You’ll have to bring cash for food and drinks, but admission is free! Must be 21 and over.
